On PvP servers, there are many zones that are flagged as contested territory. In these zones, players from opposing factions can attack each other freely. World of Warcraft has as friendly a user interface as possible to make the game accessible to all players.

Instances are meant to be challenging, but also to be fun and rewarding. There is especially good treasure in instances to entice players to explore their depths, and more powerful foes called elite monsters to keep the instances challenging. Instances are also more densely packed with monsters, and home to some of the game’s most unique and powerful adversaries. These bosses drop valuable rewards that will make defeating them well worth the effort. The experience one gains by learning these instances is another reward in itself. Running instances will help players learn how to play in a group, including how to fill their class roles and how to use teamwork and communication effectively in the context of the game. These lessons will be very valuable as players reach the end game and apply what they have learned.

World of Warcraft is an online game with thousands of players, so the game is built to facilitate extensive in-game socializing. You can search for players easily by searching by name, by looking for those in your same zone or by keywords such as a class, race, or guild name. Your honor points will never decay or decrease without spending them, so this system makes it possible to buy several smaller rewards or one large reward with the same number of points. You can visit such places as the Burning Steppes, where Grom Hellscream fell in battle against the demon lord Mannoroth, and Ironforge, where the dwarves make their home below the mountain. While you’re exploring the lands of Azeroth and Kalimdor, you’ll be treated to a multitude of different regions, each with its own visual style. Vast, varied, and beautiful, many of the regions were recreated from their appearances in prior Warcraft games, while others introduce heretofore uncharted lands in the Warcraft universe. This variety and detail can be seen in the lush forests in Ashenvale and Feralas, the snowy mountains in Dun Morogh, the savannah of the Barrens, the plains of Mulgore, and the deserts of Tanaris. Swamps in Un’Goro Crater, jungles in Stranglethorn Vale, farmland in Elwynn Forest, and even deforested hills in Stonetalon Mountains are even more of the many regions you can explore. You can only group and talk to players in your own faction. You also can only view and befriend players in your faction when using the in-game social commands. Each time a group enters such an instance, a unique version of it spawns for that group only. This means no other players can play in that instance and bother the group, steal kills or treasure from the party, or otherwise hinder its play experience. Night elf players can even see gargantuan Ancient Protectors patrolling the elven lands of Teldrassil, while a towering Ancient of War waits to greet all visitors to Darnassus.

To ease players into questing, the game makes it easy to identify quest givers by the yellow exclamation marks over their heads. It is also easy to keep track of your quests through the quest log. World of Warcraft draws heavily upon the lore of the Warcraft universe. Long-time fans of the Warcraft games are finally able to step into the world from a player’s perspective, and experience the universe firsthand. People, places, and units from the strategy games are brought to life in World of Warcraft.

When you mouse over an enemy player or creature, the pointer will turn into a sword icon to show that you can attack them. Thus, to attack, all you need to do is right-click on a monster. Casting spells is also simple: Click on a spell icon and then click on a target. To facilitate the use of spells and skills, World of Warcraft offers an action bar at the bottom of the screen where you can place icons representing all your spells and abilities. You can thus use them at a quick click of the mouse, or by pressing the hotkeys associated with the icons on your action bar.

The first available instances are for characters in the mid-teens in levels, and there are dozens more to accommodate all levels up to 70.

Those who love the story will want to dive into the quests simply for the lore they reveal, but many players will also want to complete quests for the experience and the rewards. Nearly all quests give sizeable experience rewards.

It won’t be long before you encounter your first monster in your travels. World of Warcraft is home to a huge array of creatures of all shapes, sizes, and of varying threat levels to your character’s well-being. These creatures can be found everywhere, from roaming the countryside, residing in their own camps, or populating vast dungeons. There are wandering beasts, which will range from forest creatures such as bears, spiders, and wolves, to more exotic creatures such as giant phosphorescent moths and six-legged crocodiles called crocolisks.

Many quests also provide material rewards, such as cash, potions, food, magic items, armor, and weapons. Some of the best equipment in the game will only be available as quest rewards.

The Horde faction includes the orc, tauren, troll, blood elf, and undead races, while the Alliance faction is comprised of dwarves, gnomes, humans, draenei, and night elves.

Quests are a big part of World of Warcraft. Like most other role-playing games, World of Warcraft lets you advance in level as you gain experience. Experience can be gathered by killing monsters, exploring new destinations, and completing quests. Unlike in other games, quests are a significant tool for level advancement. Players who try to level up through combat alone will likely not advance as fast as those who combine questing with defeating monsters.

Player-versus-player gameplay is very important to World of Warcraft. However, not everyone wishes to engage in PvP combat. Thus, there are different realm types, normal and PvP, that will accomodate either preference. On normal servers, PvP combat is entirely consensual. You cannot be attacked by other players unless you want to be. The other server type is player-versus-player, and on this server, you can sometimes be attacked by players of the opposing faction without warning.

World of Warcraft’s interface allows you to determine from a quick mouse-over what something is and how you can interact with it. Your mouse pointer will turn into a context-sensitive icon when you are pointing at something you can interact with. For example, NPCs such as quest givers will turn the default pointer into a chat balloon when you mouse over them to let you know that you can talk to them. Trainers, who teach your characters new abilities and spells, turn the pointer into a book icon. If you can harvest a resource from the world, your cursor turn into an appropriate action icon when you mouse over them. If you can harvest a plant, your pointer turns into a flower. If you can mine ore, you get a mining pick pointer. In this way, the game tells you immediately and intuitively how you can interact with the world.

Player-versus-Player Combat

When choosing a character to create in World of Warcraft, there are many choices before you. There are ten races and nine classes available, but the game’s primary choice when it comes to character creation is the faction you wish to fight for. You can join the Horde or the Alliance, and your choice here has an impact on what you can and cannot accomplish in the world.

On normal servers, you can enter into player-versus-player combat by storming enemy capitals, entering special PvP zones called battlegrounds, or by attacking the guards in enemy cities. Battlegrounds sell special bandages that can only be used while in the battlegrounds. You may need to raise your faction in the battleground to earn these bandages. These are very useful if you are a regular PvP warrior.

You will need to purchase an Expert First Aid book to advance First Aid higher than 125. These can sometimes be found in the auction house. You also need to purchase Manual: Heavy Silk Bandage, and Manual: Mageweave Bandage. Alliance players need to buy the books from Deneb Walker in Stromgarde Keep in Arathi Highlands. He can be difficult to find. He’s inside the keep on the safe side in a dark corner past a little bridge. Horde players need to find Balai Lok’Wein in Brackenwall Village in Dustwallow Marsh.

Bandages are channel cast and heal over time. If the player bandaging or the player being bandaged is struck in combat, the bandaging effect ends. Either way, the target still gets the ”recently bandaged” debuff. It’s really annoying to start to bandage, be hit, then you can no longer use another bandage for 60 seconds. The bandage is wasted and the target is not fully healed. For this reason, try to only use bandages when you won’t be attacked. This is not always possible, especially when bandaging in battlegrounds. Try to go hide somewhere or run away from monsters before bandaging to reduce wasted bandages.

Since First Aid does not take up one of the two profession slots, every player can get it without penalty. Some say that Tailors shouldn’t get First Aid because it wastes cloth, however, you can gather enough cloth to do both.

Portal - Creates a portal, teleporting group members that use it to X. You need to go get training for specific locations. This ability requires a reagent to use. Each portal spell has an individual cooldown.

Cone of Cold - Targets in a cone in front of the caster take X to Y frost damage and are slowed to 50% of normal speed for 8 seconds. This spell can be improved through a talent.

Arcane Brilliance (Party Buff) - Infuses the target’s party with brilliance, increasing their Intellect by X for 1 hour. Requires Reagent: Arcane Powder. This is more mana-efficient way of quickly giving all your party members the intellect buff. This spell is only available for level 56+ players via a looted book.

Frost Nova - Blasts enemies near the caster for X to Y cold damage and freezes them in place for up to Z sec. This is a main ability for the Mage. It is useful in stopping monsters from chasing you, allowing you to get away. It can also be used in combat to finish off weakened, retreating monsters. Subject to diminishing returns in PvP. This is considered an immobilizing effect.

Fire Ward - Absorbs X fire damage. Lasts 30 seconds. Use this ability when facing a fire damaging monster.

Fire Magic

Mana Shield - Absorbs X physical damage, draining mana instead. Lasts 1 minute. This is a useful ability which can buy the caster enough time to escape or deal the final damage needed to defeat an enemy. This ability can be improved through a talent.

Mage Armor - Increases your resistance to all magic by X and allows Y% of your Mana regeneration to continue while casting. Lasts 30 minutes.

There are three main schools of magic which magi use: Arcane, Fire and Frost. Certain adversaries can be resistant to a particular school of magic. If you find that a creature is resisting many spells of a certain type, try switching to another school. You can find some examples of each school of magic, below:

Fireball - Hurls a fiery ball that causes X to Y fire damage and an additional D damage over Z sec.

Fire Blast - Blasts the enemy with fire for X to Y fire damage.

Frost Magic

Slow Fall - Slows falling speed for X seconds. You can use this ability to jump from high heights without taking damage. This ability requires a reagent.

Polymorph - Polymorph transforms enemy Beasts, Humanoids, and Critters into a sheep, forcing it to wander around for the duration of the spell. While wandering, the sheep cannot attack or cast spells and will regenerate health very quickly. Only one target can be Polymorphed at a time and any damage will transform the target back into its normal form. Players targets have a decreased duration of the effect and a better chance to break free. Multiple castings on a single target are subject to diminishing returns for the spells’ durations. Polymorph duration against PvP targets is reduced to 10 seconds.

Arcane Explosion (AOE) - A powerful area of effect spell which causes an instant explosion of arcane magic around the caster, causing X to Y damage to all targets within Z yards. This ability is useful when the caster is surrounded by targets.

Frostbolt - Launches a bolt of frost at the enemy, causing X to Y frost damage and slowing movement speed for Z sec. This ability is useful for stopping monsters from running away and warning their friends.

Remove Lesser Curse - Removes 1 lesser curse from a friendly target. This is an especially useful ability.

Blizzard (AOE) - Ice shards pelt the target area doing X damage over 8 seconds.

When fighting spellcasters, use the same strategy, but remember to put on your fire and frost ward, and use counterspell when possible. Remember to blink as much as you can in order to interrupt your enemy’s rhythm. When they have low health, get up close and use your staff or arcane explosion until they are dead, and remember to put on your mana shield when you do this.

Scorch - Scorch the enemy for X to Y fire damage.

When fighting a melee oriented class in PvP, arcane explosion, mana shield, and frost nova can be extremely useful. Use instant or quick spells when fighting melee classes, because spells with a long casting time such as firebolt have a higher likelihood of being interrupted and thus could just get you killed. I spec in arcane and fire so I can get instant arcane explosion and presence of mind. In fire, I get pyroblast and blastwave. A good combination to use when fighting any class is to activate presence of mind, and use pyroblast. Presence of mind guarantees your next attack will be instant, and an instant pyroblast is unstoppable :-). After using the instant pyroblast, I like to use fire blast and blastwave. These attacks are instant and do a ton of damage. Plus, blastwave dazes your enemy, which gives you time to devise your next move. Next, you have a choice of either freezing your enemy with frost nova followed by a fireball or similar attack, or you can put on your mana shield and use instant arcane explosion over and over. The enemy will most likely have low health by that time, so either method should finish them off.

Focus on items that give stamina and defense. You can go for a sword or blunt weapon and a shield, or a two-handed sword or mace. You might want to train up all of these abilities so you can pick and choose which to use based on what weapons you have available.

When fighting a monster/player you can first use Blessing of Might or Blessing of Wisdom on yourself and Devotion Aura. You then activate Seal of the Crusader and use Judgment. After that, activate Seal of Righteousness. This combo of moves will allow you to deal continuous, powerful blows as Crusader Judgment will increase all holy damage by 100%, with Blessing of Might increasing normal attacks further, and Crusader Judgment duration is refreshed as you attack. If you used Blessing of Wisdom instead of Blessing of Might you will be able to activate Judgment for Seal of Righteousness dealing more damage than normal. Then you can activate Seal of Righteousness again, fight with Crusader Judgment still there, repeat. The Devotion will increase your armor further so you wont have to continuously stop, heal, and activate Crusader Judgment again because you stop attacking and waste more mana.

Judgements that place a debuff on their victim have their duration refreshed when the judging paladin strikes the victim with his or her melee swings. In addition, Judgements that place debuffs cannot be resisted. Using Judgement will initiate melee combat.

Greater Blessings will cast the associated blessing on all raid members that share the same class as the target. For example, if you cast Greater Blessing of Might on a warrior in your raid, all warriors in the raid party will receive Blessing of Might from you. Additionally, Greater Blessings have an increased duration of 30 minutes. These blessings require twice as much mana as the single target version, as well as a reagent. Paladins can purchase these new Greater Blessing spells from their class trainers.

Turn Undead - This causes the monster to run away. This is good for multiple monster pulls. Pick one of the monsters that isn’t being attacked and send it running away. You can then focus on the remaining monsters. This is also a good escape ability. Another use could be to send the monster running away and then heal yourself while the monster is gone. This has an increased chance of breaking early.

Divine Intervention - Sacrifices the caster to remove the party member from battle, shielding him from all harm but preventing him from taking any action for X sec.

You can only have one aura active at a time. You’ll have to decide what is best for the situation. Other players can also let you know what is best to use. If there are multiple Paladins in the same group, they can each have a different aura active, but multiple Paladins cannot stack the effects of the same aura. If you find yourself in a party with another Paladin, ask him or her what aura he or she is going to use, then use a different one that will complement it.

Once you start seeing Undead monsters, make use of all the skills that specifically target them. These skills are available at the trainer. Ask around to find out where you can find Undead monsters.

Undead Tools

Seal of the Crusader - Fills the Paladin with the spirit of a crusader for X sec. granting Y attack power. The Paladin also attacks Z% faster, but deals less damage with each attack. Only one Seal can be active on the Paladin at any one time. Unleashing this Seal’s energy will judge an enemy for A sec. increasing Holy damage taken by up to B. Only one judgement can be active at any one time.

Seal of Righteousness - Fills the Paladin with holy spirit for 30 sec, giving each melee attack a chance to cause X to Y additional Holy damage. Only one Seal can be active on the Paladin at any one time. Unleashing this Seal’s energy will cause Z Holy damage to an enemy. Does holy damage on every swing. The Judgement effect is ”Judgement of Righteousness” to differentiate it from the Seal damage in the combat log.

A Blessing is a short buff. The Paladin can only have one Blessing active on a player at a time. The intention is for players to decide what Blessing is best for the situation and change Blessings depending on what is happening. If there are multiple Paladins in a group, the limit is one Blessing per person per Paladin. Thus, with two Paladins each party member can have two Blessings.

Blessing of Wisdom - Increases mana regeneration. Use this on spellcasters like Priests, Mages, etc. You can also use this on yourself after battle to regenerate mana.
